St. Louis County resident Richard Donaldson, 17, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Pound Ridge resident Kenneth Spalter, who was shot in the throat on Feb. 10 last year, according to multiple media reports.

Spalter and his 71-year-old wife were getting out of their vehicle when Donaldson carjacked them, shooting the elderly man as the two were visiting their daughter in St. Louis.

Donaldson, who was 16-year-old at the time, and another man approached the couple and demanded their keys and the car on the 3800 block of Juniata Street, police said.

Spalter’s wife gave Donaldson the keys while the other man got into the driver’s seat. Donaldson also grabbed a laptop bag while the other man grabbed Spalter's backpack. Police said the man shot and killed Spalter when he struggled for the backpack.

A judge ruled last year that Donaldson would be tried as an adult. He pleaded guilty to charges that include second-degree murder and robbery in August.
